My niece made this 'Australian Aboriginal doll' when she was still at high school, and gave it to me as a gift. She is 26 now, and this still reminds me of her, with great affection.

A new sculpture by local sculptor Paul Dibble, has just been installed outside the Regent Theatre.

127: elephants at the library

 Mostly I hung about indoors today, organising genealogy info... but I had a brief trip to the Palmy Library, where these elephants hang out with a whale...

113: Samoan Patterns

On Thursday I posted a photo taken in the Square with a piece of sculpture in the foreground, one of 10 sculptures done in andesite for a millennium project.  Today I took a closer look at the sculpture, and found out it was made by a Samoan artist, Johnny Penisula. These patterns are the ones on its base.

111: city layers

I was in the Square today and took a few shots from around this position. I guess what struck me the most was the 'layers' here- natural and human-made -right back to the glimpse of the ranges in the background. And overarching it all was a sky with clouds that perhaps herald a change in weather for Easter.

45: City Library

 

The Palmerston North City Library opens at 10am, and is a popular place. I arrived a little early, and as a 365er with six weeks experience now behind me, I had my camera with me, so took some photos;-) 

The building used to be an iconic department store on the Square, and Ian Athfield the architect designed its rebirth as the City Library.

14: Pukeko sculpture

On two columns at the corner of Broadway and Princess St, two bronze pukeko sit atop some steel raupo. Sculptor: Paul Beaurepaire 1994. (Thanks to Bronwyn Zimmerman for the new Arts Trail Guide that lists such details!)

10: Earthquake damage in Christchurch

A sculpture with several human figures 

decorates the props for an earthquake-damaged building in Christchurch.

Downtown in Christchurch, life has returned to 'normal' for many businesses, but signs of the major earthquake are still obvious. Many of the most damaged buildings in the quake area are older brick or stone buildings. Some have been demolished, and only 'gaps' remain. Others are closed with red-stickers, some of those closed only since Boxing Day when a strong shallow aftershock hit the central city. This historic stone building has been propped up, and some-bodies have 'decorated' the props with sculpture.
