Seddon Quakes

Presently there's a pile of earthquake activity in Cook Strait, centred off the coast from Seddon. Many people in Palmy have been feeling smaller ones all the way up here for days, but until yesterday evening I hadn't felt any of them. But then came the 6.5 quake. Even this far away from the epicentre it was quite strong. I was standing by the kitchen cupboards watching the walls and windows wave around and it seemed like the windows might pop out of their frames. But amazingly, not even one ornament fell. The house rolled around for ages, one lot of waves just seeming to bounce right into the next lot.
Fortunately, damage even in coastal places close to the epicentre has been relatively minor. But it was enough to stop the Palmerston North Clocktower dead in its tracks.

  1. Good to hear that damage has not been so bad and that people have not been injured. It's the 'quake we were rehearsing responses to for decades. Do hope that it really was the big one.

    1. I don't think it is the big one... There is potential from Cook Strait faults for much bigger quakes I read. But let's hope those don't come anytime soon. I expect we will all be doing earthquake drills as soon as school goes back!

  2. Wow, funny that you recently mentioned PN quakes. A stopped clock is always such a good marker.

    1. I think it was being restarted this afternoon. They plan to have it pink or blue for the royal baby, so it wouldn't do to have it telling the wrong time!

  3. Glad to see your post! I was actually checking in here to see if all was ok. Think of you often, but esp when I hear of things like this in your neck of the world.
